Business directories offer a lot of services to help you advertise your company, a listing is the first step (a short description of your company), on top of that some offer Banners (a flash image displayed across the top of the product pages advertising your company) and one if the most powerful tools they offer are Unique Search Phrases (Terms).
Every company has a special name for their Search Terms (some examples are 'Magnet Links' or 'Hot Links') these are very powerful forms of advertising and offer your company a unique term for a set duration. You purchase the term for a set period (usually for a year) - this term is unique to your company and once sold con not be brought by any other companies until your contract runs out (of course you will be given first priority on renewing the term if you wish to).
This unique term can be anything you want (you should pick the product or service you most want to advertise and incorporate it into a phrase). An example of this would be 'Used Compressors Hertfordshire', the search engines pick up this term and index it. This means that when people type that phrase into the search engine a link to your company page will appear near the top (if all goes well) and give you amazing coverage world wide.
Single words can be used but are highly unlikely to place anywhere in the search engines due to how competitive the word is, multiple words in search terms are much more effective.
