DeWitt Wins Region 4 2013 Community Excellence Award Nomination

DeWitt City Manager Daniel Coss accepts the 2013 Region 4 Community Excellence Award Nomination.
The city of DeWitt earned top honors as the Michigan Municipal League’s Region 3 Community Excellence Award (CEA) winner at the Michigan Municipal League’s 2013 Capital Conference in Lansing on Tuesday, April 9, 2013. The region includes all communities in the east-central part of the state’s Lower Peninsula, excluding the Thumb.
The city won for its First Annual 2012 DeWitt Community Showcase event. The Showcase took place in April of 2012 and is a true definition of collaboration in the finest form. The event featured the cooperation of three different jurisdictions—the city of DeWitt, DeWitt Township and DeWitt Public Schools. The event was held at the DeWitt High School and was an opportunity for area businesses, students and community civic groups to “show-off” to the community what they had to offer. The event was free for all who participated and featured a Taste of DeWitt, student art pieces, student performances and more than 100 exhibits by area businesses and civic groups. The event drew more than 2,000 area residents.
“Receiving the Region 4 CEA nomination is a nice way for us to show off some of the things we have going on inside our region to the rest of the state, and it’s something we’re very proud of,” said DeWitt City Manager Daniel Coss. “I think of our Community Showcase as an event that any community in any part of the state of Michigan could replicate and make their own. We hope our event inspires others.”
DeWitt competed for the Region 4 title against Mt. Pleasant’s Access Adventure Trail project. DeWitt will now go on to compete against the other six regional winners for the statewide CEA at the League’s Annual Convention Sept. 17-20, 2013, in Detroit. The CEA program, affectionately called “The Race for the Cup,” was started by the League in 2007 to recognize innovative solutions taking place in Michigan’s cities, villages and urban townships.

Imlay City earned top honors as the Michigan Municipal League’s Region 5 Community Excellence Award (CEA) winner at the Michigan Municipal League 2013 Capital Conference in Lansing on Tuesday, April 9, 2013. The region includes all communities in the Thumb.
The city’s economic gardening program began in the fall of 2010 with the development of a strategic process to foster growth in the key areas of small businesses, entrepreneurs, and overall economic development, or SEED. Growth is fostered through continuous networking events, Entrepreneur Meet Ups, educational workshops and other initiatives.
“The goal is to position Imlay City so that the creation of jobs will be sustainable and Imlay City will continue to be a desirable place for the citizens of our community,” said City Manager D. Wayne O’Neal.
Mayor Margaret Guerrero also praised the program as an enhancement for the entire region.
“This is a great opportunity to expand our economic development and to increase the entrepreneurs in the Thumb area,” said Guerrero.
City officials also credited local business owners for their involvement and ongoing input in the types of training and events needed, making it easier for the city to plan speakers and workshops geared to meet those needs.

The other Region 5 entries included Lexington’s tradition of volunteerism, and Harbor Beach’s interpretive sign project.
